I was a theater kid before I was a journalist, and then for a time I was both, and you can all see which won out in the end, but my heart still knows and feels the pull of the theater life. It’s probably why I’m so intrigued by and enamored with Team StarKid. They’re fascinating, both in terms of how they create and collaborate, as well as how they have been able to forge this digital to physical connection with a fan base. It’s great when pop culture can be an inspiration, that’s a driving force in what I do and I love seeing others succeed at it.
The StarKids were kind enough to give me and my photographer incredible access to a day of their tour in Los Angeles, allowing me the space to be an ethnographer (ironically for their archeology-themed show!) but not a fly on the wall – the reason so many people love them is you can’t help but love them. It’s very easy to feel awkward or out of place when you’re “the journalist” and you’re spending so much time with “the subjects,” and on the flip side there’s a point where you can feel “too close.” I’m so glad they gave me the space to feel neither.  I’m excited to share my story and Joseph’s beautiful photos (I know, really, that the photos are the liquid gold for fandom and you’ll reupload them to Tumblr, but click on Billboard please so I can prove you enjoyed it) of what a day in the life of Team Starkid is like with their fans.  Thank you Pat, Samara, Brian H, Brian R, Joey, Joe, Dylan, Meredith, Lauren, Jim, Jaime, Charlene, Megan, Tomek, Dave, Clark, Darren, Corey, Sarah, June, Liam, Julia and whomever I’m forgetting because there are a million of you. You’re totally awesome.
Ask is open as always.  If you want to know what Joey Richter smelled like I can already tell you it was “pork bbq.”

This was a really enjoyable article, I loved the description of the backstage antics.

Darren Criss on the June 2012 issue of Candy Magazine
(sorry for the crappy quality! Here’s what is says.)
“This Glee star is such a puppy and it’s not just because of his adorbs eyes. He’s a ball of energy, unabashedly earnest, and seems like an awesome snuggle buddy (put away your judgy face—you know you’re thinking it too!). But you know what we love most about him? He’s a bullet-speed achiever.
Played The Boy Who Lived in two Harry Potter parodies (2009 and 2010) put by Team Starkid, the theater group he co-founded in college.
Almost focused on music instead of acting (regular gigs are hard to come by), but then landed a role on Glee and suited up as the out-and-proud Blaine (2010)
Juggled working on Glee, filming the movie Imogene, and writing music for Team StarKid’s Starship musical.
Starred in Broadway’s How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying (2012) for three weeks, during the Glee hiatus.
Did you know? Darren cut his signature ‘fro to audition for the role of the dapper Blaine Anderson.”

‘Glee’ Star Darren Criss Looks Forward To Season 4

Well, Gleeks, tonight the McKinley High seniors don their caps and gowns for the “Glee” season finale. With the show’s core characters graduating—including Rachel Berry, Finn Hudson, Kurt Hummel and Quinn Fabray—fans are wondering whether the series will succumb to the college effect. (You know, when a TV show begins with a group of teens as high school students, sends them off to college and the series never quite recovers.)

When MTV News caught up with Darren Criss, who plays Kurt’s boyfriend, Blaine, he dismissed fans’ worries. “I think people got hung up on the idea that it’s over, which it’s not at all,” he said. “It’s just another departure point. When you graduated high school it’s not the end of the world.”

The actor said he’s interested in seeing how the graduating seniors’ stories develop, but he also mentioned what he hopes is in store for the future of his character. On “Glee“‘s Whitney Houston tribute episode, “Dance with Somebody,” Kurt and Blaine had their first argument when Blaine discovered text messages between Kurt and some random guy. By the time the episode was over, all was well and the two made up. Darren told us he’d like to see a fight that lasts longer.

“[Blaine]’s going to be a senior. I’m curious to see where his journey takes him,” he said. “Him and Kurt seem to be pretty strong, but Chris [Colfer] and I liked a little drama, so we like things being shook up maybe for more than one episode. So, I don’t know. We’ll see. I’m just happy to be invited to the party.”

ILU, Darren, but stop.

Though I did like him saying that there’s a lot he’d like to see re: Blaine. That’s a statement I totally support.

TvGuide: Glee Stars’ Summer Plans

For a while it seemed as though Glee would suffer a mass cast exodus as graduating seniors Rachel, Finn and Kurt headed off to pursue theater-arts studies in the Big Apple. But now Fox has announced that the series will juggle both NYC and Ohio-set story lines, with Sarah Jessica Parker and Kate Hudson signing on as New York-based mentors. (I’m hearing the New York sets will be built in Hollywood so the cast will continue working together.) With nearly everyone expected back and no summer concert tour planned during their hiatus, for the first time in years the Glee cast has a couple of free months before heading back to work. Here’s how they plan to spend the summer.

Cory Monteith (Finn): “I’m going to do an independent film toward the end of the summer. It’s going to be a lot darker than Glee and a much different character from Finn.”

Jane Lynch (Sue): “I’m going to Vermont for a month and doing jury duty in July. I’ve been pushing off my civic duty and now I have to do it. Hopefully it won’t take too long.”

Darren Criss charms at Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards, talks stage pranks and ‘Newsies’

Darren Criss may have only been on Broadway for three weeks, but he’s already solidified his place in the Broadway community and earned an enviable résumé credit: host of Broadway.com’s 13th-annual Audience Choice Awards.

EW attended the theatrical get-together last night at the Time-Warner Center in New York, where the festivities were merry and the presenters (including Adam Pascal, Brian D’Arcy James, Judith Light and Tammy Blanchard) were even more so. While other theater awards ceremonies can be stuffy affairs, Criss’s self-referential shtick got things off to a lively start. Armed with a guitar and a piano, Criss made his way through the program with musical interludes that poked fun at his short-lived stint in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and skewered some of his Broadway contemporaries — which he was known to do during his prank-filled run as J. Pierrepont Finch.

Speech! Speech! Darren Criss Thanks Fans After Winning 2012 Broadway.com Audience Choice Award

darrencriss-news:

One of the highlights of Darren Criss’ appearance at the 2012 Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards was his charming acceptance speech after winning the award for Best Replacement. In the midst of hosting the ceremony, Criss picked up a prize for his limited engagement as J. Pierrepont Finch in the Broadway revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Criss began by joking that his award was rigged (it wasn’t!), then warmly thanked the fans for their support. Enjoy his speech below, and click here for more scoop on Criss’ big night.

“I’m glad to see Broadway.com kept their end of the bargain, that’s good. Very reliable people, I take back everything I ever said about them. Well, gee thanks. Schucks, this is cool! I would be remiss not to thank Mr. Daniel Radcliffe for giving me shoes to replace in the first place ,and to Craig [Zadan] and Neil [Meron] over there, who were crazy to let that kid from Glee do a show for three weeks, which is absolutely unheard of, and a producer’s nightmare, but you did it and let me do it and we ended up doing pretty ok, so thank you for that opportunity.

“I’m a huge, huge fan and I’m always on Broadway.com a lot looking up new shows. And I’ve always been a theater fan and a person that votes for things and blogs and gets really nerdy about the whole process. People are always asking me, ‘When is the next time you’re going to be on Broadway?’ and I say ‘Well, whenever they let me.’ So between the fan support and my love of Broadway, I hope it’s sometime very soon. And in the meantime, maybe one of the fans at home will get one of these for replacing me. Break a leg!”
